About

Kanjisho is a web application designed to provide informations about Japanese language. You can use it to look for words, English definitions and kanjis easily. This project has been initiated by Matthieu Locussol as a personal project in order to provide a modern-looking Japanese-English tool.

Third-party sources ❤️

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Kanjisho uses multiple sources of data provided by third parties in order to provide quality content:

  • Jisho.org API, which provides an amazing search API we can use for free. That being said, the data for your search results on Kanjisho will be the same as those obtained on Jisho. Jisho itself uses data coming from various sources.
  • KanjiVG, which provides svg paths for most of kanjis used by the Japanese language.
  • kanjiapi.dev, which provides a JSON file containing data on over 13,000 kanjis including on'yomi, kun'yomi, meanings and grades.
  • Tatoeba is providing sentence pairs for Japanese and English under the CC BY 2.0 FR license.
  • Kuroshiro is released under the MIT licence and allows me converting japanese sentences to their furiganas and romajis equivalent.

The above data sources are used in conformance with their respective licence (CC BY 3.0 FR license for Jisho, KanjiVG and Kanjiapi.dev). If you find any vices, errors or malfunctions, please let me know so that I can correct them.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Kanjisho uses multiple sources of data provided by third parties.

The search results are provided by the wonderful Jisho API which itself uses various data sources which you can find on the jisho's website. The data concerning the kanji strokes are provided by the KanjiVG project, under the CC BY 3.0 FR license. I also use Tatoeba to provide example sentences and Kuroshiro to obtain the furiganas and romajis versions of the sentences.

If you find any vices, errors or malfunctions, please let me know so that I can correct them.
